TSC swam in Round One of the Arena League on the evening of Saturday 11th October in Leamington Spa. Our squad was a combination of highly promising, keen-as-mustard youngsters, accomplished development swimmers and our extremely talented seniors.
Our rivals were well-supported and most had the luxury of hand-picking their teams from large performance squads. True to Tewkesbury Swimming Club's reputation for excellent team spirit, each and every swimmer cheered their team mates on throughout the evening. Some of our swimmers swam up in age groups, but were never overawed and fought to the finish every time.
Stand-out results included magnificent first places for a highly-focused Matt Benson, an awesome Josh O-Neill and his equally impressive sister, Sophie. Hannah Church epitomised the TSC team ethic, swimming several races in a short timeframe with plenty of technique and power. Will Gibney showed his class, James Partridge powered through his lengths, and fellow seniors Jess Lane, Hannah Cook, Jess Butler, Alex Tailford, Chris Graffin and Jordan Barnes all produced great performances.
Katie Francis and Alex Farnhill showed composure under pressure, Oli Osborne again demonstrated his immense potential, and he was supported by top-notch swims from Harry Willmott, Harry Lane and Bob Tharme. Younger girls who stood out on the night included Eve Heeley, Cora Brady, Becky Church, Molly Wilson, Ashleigh Holton and Tonicha Taylor. The young boys also contributed with Ethan Cooke, Jack Beazer, Theo Bichard, Seb Barley, Harry Quiney and Dylan Hill relishing the challenges they faced.
The experience of performing against some of the strongest swimmers in their age groups will have served our swimmers well, their team spirit is now even more galvanised, and they are well aware of the hard work that lies ahead in order for their PBs to improve.
It wouldn't be an Arena League evening without a refuelling stop on the way home, and great liaison between our Marchants coach driver and McDonalds in Evesham ensured we didn't wait too long for a much-needed supper.
Well done to all our swimmers – you can all be proud of your performances.
Thanks to Craig Skinner, Emma Wilson, Dave O'Neill, Claire Willmott, Rich Lane, Steve Beazer, Laura Quiney, Sarah O'Neill, Tami Taylor, Fran Osborne, Dave Holton and Steve Brady for your supporting roles and many thanks to Hannah Cook and Jess Butler for participating.
